Torchwood: Miracle Day Comic-Con 2011 panel

By Acquanetta Ferguson, Torchwood Examiner

On July 22nd the Torchwood: Miracle Day on Starz panel opened up to a rousing applause as the major characters were introduced to the happy fans in the audience. John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Mekhi Phifer, Alexa Havins, Bill Pullman, and Jane Espenson.

From the get go, even though Russell T. Davis was not in attendance, John Barrowman carried the panel by answering questions about the show, even giving little jokes as well as innuendos throughout the hour. The burning question that the moderator asked about the killing off of Ianto, John basically stated that while he gets emails about it and he and Eve quickly stated that they had nothing to do with the writing of the script, but that they appreciate the fans and their love for such a beloved character such as Ianto.

Eve Myles exclaimed that In and Out Burger rocked her world and that she loves the animal fries, and would consider moving to Los Angeles as she loved it so much. She even joked a bit herself, when someone shouted out loud that they loved her, and she told them to call her. The audience also got to hear Eve's American accent which everyone else will hear in an upcoming episode, which was quite funny to hear, and as John said, it sounded like a Jersey shore accent.

Mekhi Phifer and Alexa Havens were wonderfully sincere in playing in the fourth season of Torchwood. Mekhi, even tried a Welsh accent, but it was some weird hybrid that had the audience as well as the panel in stitches. Then John was talking about the scene on the beach in Wales and how Mekhi in between takes was wrapped in a big jacket, and three layers of thermals, when Mekhi quickly stated that he was black and tropical. As you can imagine, the audience fell out laughing at this statement.

Alexa came into the project with her husband already a fan who she says was more than encouraged her to take the part.

Bill Pullman expressed his love of the TV show, as well as his appreciation of the UK fans when he went there promoting the show with Eve.

Jane spoke a bit about writing for Torchwood and her episodes. The moderator asked her who was harder to work for Joss Whedon or Russell T. Davis, but she answered it quite diplomatically by stating that both men are different, but working for Joss was harder because she was younger, but she gained quite a bit of confidence from that experience.

A lot of what went on was visual as John, Eve and Mekhi had a lot of back and forth with just their expressions, which you can see on the clip.

Overall if you didn't see the show before you saw the panel, the cast made the show sound interesting enough to bring you on board, especially if you have never seen the show before.

Torchwood: Miracle Day stars: John Brarrowman, Eve Myles, Mekhi Phifer, and Bill Pullman. One day nobody dies, thus setting off a chain of events that pits the remaining Torchwood crew with America's CIA to get to the bottom of this issue.
